Download links

What is needed?

  • USB data cable (microUSB)
  • USB pendrive or MicroSD memory card (for storing CyanogenMod, and Google Apps)
  • Softwares: (see "Download links" section: odin, TWRP recovery, cyanogenmod, Google Apps are included in the package)
    • Odin flasher (for installing custom recovery)
    • Custom recovery (TWRP for example)
    • CyanogenMod ROM file
    • Google applications (optional, only if Google Play is needed)
    • Original newest firmware (optional, can be downloaded from http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-T320/)

Firmware update procedure

Overview: 1. (optional) Update original firmware 2. Install custom recovery (TWRP) 3. Install CyanogenMod ROM 4. (optional) Install Google Apps
Before you start: It is recommended to remove all other connected mobile devices from PC during flashing operation. User data / files will be erased. Fully charge tablet before flashing.

1. Download "Samsung_SM-T320_Galaxy_Tab_Pro_8.4_install_CyanogenMod.zip" (see "Download links" section), and unzip it.
Optional: Download the newest original Samsung firmware from http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-T320/ and unzip it. (Should be a file with .md5 extension.)

2. Turn on tablet in Download mode: first, turn off the tablet completely if it is turned on. Push "volume down" and "Power ON" buttons simultaneously, until a Warning message will appear:

3. Push "Volume UP" button to enter into Download mode. You should see this:

4. Connect the tablet to PC using USB cable, and wait until the drivers were installed.

5. Flashing the newest original firmware on tablet: this step is optional. I recommend it because the original Samsung firmware contains the newest modem firmware for the tablet, while the custom CyanogenMod firmware doesn't. If you would like to skip this step, go to number XXX.
Start "Odin3 v3.10.7.exe" software from "0 Odin" directory, and load the original Samsung firmware. In this case is "T320XXU1BPA1_T320PHN1BNJ1_HOME.tar.md5" file. Make sure that the tablet is recognized by Odin software: in the ID:COM field the COM number should be shown where the tablet is connected.

6. On the "Options" tab untick "Auto Reboot".

7. Go back to "Log" tab, and press "Start" button to start the flashing procedure.

8. When the flashing of the original Samsung firmware has finished ("PASS" with green background), it is time to flash the custom recovery.
The custom recovery (TWRP) is in the "1 Custom recovery" folder: the "twrp-2.8.7.0-mondrianwifiue.img.tar" file is a flashable file by Odin, while "twrp-3.0.0-2-mondrianwifiue.img" file is flashble by TWRP recovery. (By the time of creating this article a flashable TWRP3.0 recovery file was'nt available.)
The newest TWRP recovery for Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 can be downloaded from this link: https://dl.twrp.me/mondrianwifiue/
Load TWRP custom recovery file: "twrp-2.8.7.0-mondrianwifiue.img.tar" by pressing the AP button, and make sure that "Auto reboot" is unticked on "Options" tab. Then, press "Start" button to start the flashing procedure. After a few seconds you should see "All threads completed" and "PASS".

9. Now disconnect tablet from the USB cable. The tablet is in Download mode now. It should be started in Recovery mode. If you would start the tablet in normal mode (to start the original Samsung firmware), the custom recovery which was just flashed would be reverted back to the original Samsung. So now keep pressing "volume up", and "ON" button at the same time. Tablet will turn off, then it will turn on in recovery mode. When TWRP recovery is loaded, it will patch Samsung firmware, so it will not revert back the original Samsung recovery.
If the tablet starts, then wait until it is started completely, then turn it off, start it in download mode, flash TWRP recovery, than try to start in recovery mode again.

10. Copy TWRP recovery update file, CyanogenMod firmware file, and Gapps file to a microSD card, and insert it into the tablet.
TWRP recovery update file: "twrp-3.0.0-2-mondrianwifiue.img" from "1 Custom recovery" folder, or download the newest from https://dl.twrp.me/mondrianwifiue/ site. (files with .img extension)
CyanogenMod firmware file: "cm-13.0-20160325-NIGHTLY-mondrianwifi.zip" is included in the package. You can download the newest from: https://download.cyanogenmod.org/?type=nightly&device=mondrianwifi Please keep in mind that CyanogenMod vaersion and Google Apps version should match: in this case CyanogenMod version is 13.0 which is Android 6.0.1, and you must flash Google Apps for Android 6.0.1
Google Apps: "gapps-601-base-20160323-1-signed.zip" Other Google Apps packages can be downloaded from http://opengapps.org/ however, in my case when I used opengapps packages, I got "setup wizard has stopped working" error message after turning on.

11. (optional) Updating TWRP recovery: first mount memory card by clicking on "Mount", then selecting "Micro SDCard". Then go back, and click on "Install", then install "twrp-3.0.0-2-mondrianwifiue.img" from memory card.

12. (optional) Completely wipe tablet: click on "Wipe" then click on "Advanced wipe", then choose "Dalvik / ART Cache", "Cache", "Data", "Internal Storage" and "System" (don't choose memory card and usb-otg), then "Swipe to Wipe".

13. Installing CyanogenMod firmware and (if you need Google Play Store) Google Apps: Choose Install, select CyanogenMod firmware file from microSD memory card, then install it. After the installation has finished, install Google Apps: "gapps-601-base-20160323-1-signed.zip". It is important to install Google Apps right after installing CyanogenMod, because if the tablet is turned on, then the Google Apps are installed in recovery, then you'll get "setup wizard has stopped working" error message.

14. Go back to TWRP's main menu and choose "Reboot", then "System".

15. The tablet should start now, and the Setup wizard will start. (The first start could take much longer than normally.)

16. (optional) Enabling Developer options, and rooting tablet: go to "Settings", then "About tablet", then click many times on "Build number". After 5-10 clicks Developer options will be enabled. Go back to "Settings" main menu, and choose "Developer options". To root the tablet choose "Root access", then choose "Apps only" or "Apps and ADB".
Other useful tools are: "Advanced reboot" and "Kill app back button".
CyanogenMod can be updated in Settings -> About tablet -> CyanogenMod updates

17: Ready! The tablet has a custom recovery (TWRP), CyanogenMod firmware and root access.
